Really interesting/funny post by Pure.fm that caught my attention and make me laugh too 😉
“To become a rock star DJ, you have to learn how to dance like a rock star DJ. Since space is very limited in the DJ booth, most DJs have adapted to the following 6 dance moves.
1. Fist Pump:
Purpose: The DJ wants to get the crowd pumped because the track is a “banger”
Origin: Jersey Shore Guido DJs
Ex: Fedde Le Grand: His right arm is larger than his left arm from fist pumping so much.
2. Overhead Clap:
Purpose: The DJ’s way of interacting with the crowd. The DJ claps; you clap (very similar to the game of Simon Says).
Origin: As a child, the DJ was a big fan of the game Simon Says so he got the crowd to play along.
Ex: All Djs do this. Who wouldn’t want to make an entire club clap with him?!

3. One Finger Fist Pump: (Almost identical to the fist pump except the DJ does the #1 sign)
Purpose: The DJ wants to remind the crowd that he is THE #1 in the club right now.
Origin: Irish Djs’ way of signaling to the promoter that they want ONE more bottle of vodka.
Ex: Norman Doray: He will finger pump through his entire set if he learned how to DJ with one hand.

4. The Heart: (Makes a heart shape with two hands)
Purpose: The DJ wants to show the crowd that he loves their support (and all the money they spent on buying his music & merchandise).
Origin: Gay DJs way of showing how much he loves the dance floor filled with shirtless sweaty men.
Ex: Laidback Luke: No other DJ can make a more perfect heart with their hands than he can (in a very heterosexual way).

5. Magic Jazz Piano Fingers: (Lift both hands up and wiggle the fingers like you’re playing air piano)
Purpose: To keep the crowd entertained when the melody part of the song is comes on and the DJ has nothing better to do with his hands.
Origin: A jealous DJ’s wife wanted him to show his wedding ring to the disco booth bunnies, so he kept lifting his hands up every 5 mins and wiggling his fingers during his set.
Ex: Sander Van Magic-Finger Doorn. His fingers will fall off if he keeps doing this dance move.

6. The Spread Eagle: (Arms stretched to the side, puff out chest, face the sky)
Purpose: The DJ is showing the crowd that he should be worshipped at that point.
Origin: Brazilian DJs that were copying the statue of Jesus Christ in Rio De Janeiro.
Ex: Tiesto: The trance lord is also the Lord of the Spread Eagle. Even his logo is an eagle with its wings spread open.

Once you have mastered these top 6 dance moves, you are on your way to rock star DJ status.
Once you become a rock star DJ, you can invent your own dance moves. For example, Steve the Ninja Aoki invented the DJ crowd surf; jump into a crowd filled with drunk people and hope you make it back into the booth in time to mix your next track in.
